As some of you may have read, while on vacation this summer, we toured the Jelly Belly Factory in Fairfield, California. Not only do they sell their signature Jelly Belly Jelly Beans, they also sell their Belly Flops jelly beans. Belly Flops are “irregular” jelly beans. Belly Flops are either too small, too big, are stuck together with other beans or are just oddly shaped. These candy rejects are sold much cheaper than the perfect beans. Do you want to know a secret? They taste the same!
While we were at the Factory, we had some fun conversations over those Belly Flops. We’ve talked about how unique they are! We’ve wondered how some of them stuck together. We have laughed at their shapes. There was one bean in the bag that was actually seven beans in one! How amazing is that? We wouldn’t have thought twice about regular Jelly Beans. We would have tossed them in our mouth and hoped we got a flavor we liked. These irregular beans made the trip interesting!
This concept got me thinking… if we had found an imperfect Jelly Bean in a bag of regular Jelly Beans, would our conversations have been different? You bet! It probably would have been negative. “Ewww! How did this get in here? It’s weird! I’m not eating that.” Yet, in a bag of imperfect, irregular beans, we laugh about the differences.
It’s a pretty good mirror for life.
How often have we felt like a Belly Flop? How many times have we felt pushed aside because part of us isn’t perfect? I am not perfect. (Hence ‘My Imperfect Kitchen!’ :-) ) I’m oddly shaped. I would not meet society’s criteria for a “perfect” bean. Does that mean I am not worthy? I don’t think so!
Some of us may look different on the outside, but inside we’re all pretty much the same. We’re worthy of fun conversations and smiles for the things that make us unique!
I would challenge you this week, to have fun with the imperfect beans in your life! Smile together over the odd and unique things that make each one of us special and never, ever toss anyone aside for not being perfect!
None of you are Flops to me! We love imperfections here! Especially root beer flavored ones – they’re delicious! ;-)
